Tunisia set measures to revive tourism


TUNISIAONLINENEWS- During a working session held on Monday in Tunis, in the presence of Trade and Tourism Minister Mehdi Houas, Secretary of State in charge of Tourism Slim Chaker, Chairman of the Tunisian Hotel Trade Federation (FTH), Mr. Mohamed Belajouza and Executive Committee members of this structure focused on the situation of tourism and difficulties faced by hotels .

According to a statement from the Ministry of Trade and Tourism released on Tuesday, the debate dealt with approving several measures to support hotels which are now facing difficulties, especially at the social and financial levels.

In this regard, Mr. Mehdi Houas reasserted the Government’s willingness to revive this sector which has a great importance at the economic level, particularly in terms of employment.

Mr. Mohamed Belajouza welcomed the support provided by the tourism administration to the development of competitiveness of hotels, while focusing on the need to encourage an effective partnership between the profession and the administration.

These measures include particularly paying employers’ contributions to the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), establishing an agreement on rescheduling tax royalties’ payment, granting hotels, which request it, overdrafts and deferring payments owed for the first half of 2011 to help them pay operating expenses including wages.

A request has also been sent to the Transport and Equipment Ministry to speed up opening the sky to allow low cost carriers to operate on Tunisia and strengthen activities of the airports of Tozeur and Tabarka by operating new air flights.

The debate also focused on promotion of domestic tourism, mainly in the next school holidays.
In this regard, hotel keepers pledged to support this sector through special offers for Tunisian families.
